History of Rancho
Mirage, CA

While many modern settlements were established during the 1920s
and 1930s, Rancho Mirage rose to prominence after World War II, mainly
due to the historic Annenberg Estate. The 200-acre estate, which was owned
by Walter and Leonore Annenberg, was a popular vacation destination for many
wealthy and high-profile guests, including Frank Sinatra, Ginger Rogers, Bob Hope,
and Fred Astaire, to name a few. Several former U.S. Presidents also vacationed at
the estate, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, which is why the
city came to be known as the “Playground of Presidents.”

The city of Rancho Mirage was incorporated in 1973, and was created from a merger of
Mirage Cove and the unincorporated communities of Thunderbird, Magnesia, Tamarisk, Palmas,
and Desert, known collectively as the “Cove communities.”

Although the city’s economy was originally anchored on seasonal resorts, golfing, and rentals, it
has expanded throughout the years to include light industry, commerce, and high-end shopping venues.
